Can an SCS-Certified Grower Use Rough Diamonds from External Sources for SCS Certification

SCS-007 certification applies specifically to diamonds grown and managed under the control of the certified producer. This means that only rough diamonds produced directly by the SCS-certified grower are eligible for validation under the certification framework.

If a grower purchases rough diamonds from external sources, such as CVD or HPHT suppliers that are not SCS-certified, those diamonds cannot be included in the grower’s certified production output. They fall outside the scope of the grower’s certification, even if they meet similar technical or quality standards.

Why This Restriction Exists

The SCS-007 standard requires complete traceability and proof of ethical and sustainable production practices. This traceability begins at the point of origin, meaning that only material grown under certified conditions can carry the SCS certification.

Allowing uncertified rough material would compromise the integrity of the certification and break the verified chain of custody that guarantees responsible production. Maintaining control over all certified rough ensures that the grower’s output remains transparent, verifiable, and aligned with the sustainability goals of SCS-007.

How to Stay Compliant

  1. Use only rough diamonds produced within your certified facilities for SCS-007 validation.
  2. If you need to purchase external rough for other production purposes, keep those lots completely separate from your certified inventory.
  3. Ensure that all certified production data, including growth records and batch traceability, is properly documented and visible through the blockchain.
  4. Communicate clearly with partners and auditors to confirm that only your self-grown rough is included in SCS-007 Certified batches.
